Using the theme of light as the unifying concept, the Festival embraces the multifaceted Perth community through these arts. It is a smoke- and alcohol-free event that is estimated to attract attendances of 10,000 to 15,000 people over the 4 days. Being the inheritor of the Lucknow Kalka-Bindadin school or gharana,  and the descendant of the legendary Maharaj family of Kathak dancers, including his two uncles, Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj, and his father and guru, Acchan Maharaj, he is currently the leading exponent of Kathak in the world.<br /> <br />Ever immersed in the nuances of Kathak, Maharaji also has an excellent command over Hindustani classical music and is a virtuoso in vocals and several percussion and string instruments. Pandit Baluji is one of India's greatest Sitarists. He is also the only musician with solo album releases of dilruba (fretted fiddle) and Surbhar (bass sitar). Pandit Baluji&rsquo;s playing has been described as &ldquo;lush and utterly fresh&rdquo; (Scotsman 2007).<br /><br />Pandit Baluji&rsquo;s speciality lies in being able to make Indian Classical music more than just about incredible technique but about emotion and feelings. Pandit Baluji usually works in a trio with tabla and tanpura accompaniment. His ability to communicate using the subtleties and complexities of sitar transcends cultural boundaries.<br /><br />His command of complex rhythms and his inexhaustible imagination make every performance a unique and moving occasion. The workshop covered basics in shape, light & dark shading, colour and working with music. The nuances of dance (Odissi, Bharata Natyam, Kathak and Western Contemporary) interwoven with visual art paintings and ancient Indian song and poetry, Suvarna Sutra provided for interesting viewing.<br /><br />The last half hour &lsquo;Shakti &ndash; The Eternal Energy&rsquo; was a culmination of the work, that was not afraid to take chances. The festival of fusion music featured some of the most popular names in Indian music, such as Dr. L. Subramaniam on the violin, and singing sensation Kavita Krishnamurthy.<br /><br />Founded by renowned violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam in 1992, in memory of his late father, Professor V. Lakshminarayana, the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festivals held annually and has been hosted by India, the United States, Germany in conjunction with the Berlin Festival, Sri Lanka, Norway and other countries. The festival has seen the coming together of the finest musicians from all around the globe.<br /><br />The festival is the only global music festival where eminent artists around the world share the stage in a m&eacute;lange of cultural and musical traditions. In the past, the festival had featured collaborative works of L. Subramaniam, his wife Kavita Krishnamurthy Subramaniam, Steven Seagal, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Stanley Clarke, Pandit Jasraj , Billy Cobham, Jean Luc Ponty, Miya Masaoka, Chris Rhyne, Ghulam Ali, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Roar Engelberg and others.<br /><br />The tour which culminated in Malaysia, was presented by The Temple of Fine Arts International. The tour had presented a 14-member fusion orchestra by some of the world&rsquo;s best musicians. Utilising a plethora of instrumentation such as the Indian violin, sarangi, bass guitar and keyboards, the show came together as an exciting package, that comprised of the finest fusion of artists and their music, that reached out to cultural audiences in Western Australia.</span><br /><br />Artists from Temple of Fine Arts had the opportunity to accompany Dr. L. Thousands of devotees around the world gathered in Coimbatore for the customery rituals and ceremony. In a serene and full ceremonious manner our beloved light and joy, Swamiji was laid to rest, in the Shivanjali Centre located in Vadavalli, Coimbatore. Dancers, artists, and devotees came together and rejoiced in dance, music & poetic love offerings. His inner light becoming one with the universal energy is one of the most auspious moments of a soul's journey. Swamiji as we lovingly call him was singulary instrumental in establishing the lifeforce that lies within the Temple of Fine Arts.... His inspiration in careful nurturing thousands young and old to serve, love & give without expectation was one of the most valuable teachings instilled. The Temple of Fine Arts performed the Batu Nritta, an expression of vibrant pure dance movement intertwined with complex patterns and woven in a thread of evocative melodies. The piece spoke of ancient sculptured poses - Karanas - found in Temples of Eastern India, that had miraculously come to life.
