The Swan Festival of Lights (the Festival) is a free event promoting and showcasing themes of multicultural harmony and cross-cultural interaction through dance, music, cultural demonstrations and cuisine. Using the theme of light as the unifying concept, the Festival embraces the multifaceted Perth community through these arts. The idea is to promote interaction, understanding and appreciation of different cultures in a healthy, fun and family-friendly atmosphere.
The Swan Festival of Lights 2009 is to be held from 8th to 11th October 2009 at Barrack Square, Perth. It is a smoke- and alcohol-free event that is estimated to attract attendances of 10,000 to 15,000 people over the 4 days. It is being presented by The Temple of Fine Arts Inc and Annalakshmi Cultural Centre of WA, and proudly supported by City Of Perth and The Bell Tower.
The main activities during the festival would be:

Dance & music performances each night featuring local performing groups from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds
Food stalls serving food from around the world (vegetarian)
Displays of traditional handicraft and attire
Other fun activities such as face painting, henna tattoos, bouncing castles, etc

The Festival is open to the public without charge, and the nightly cultural performances and most of the workshops will be free.

Saraswati MahaVidhyalaya and Annalakshmi Cultural Center presents CHAND TARANG, an exhilarating and energetic performance in the classical style of Kathak.
Presenting Paramita Maitra, a dancer with unmistakable style, energy, stunning grace and precision accompanied by the students and teachers of the Temple of Fine Arts/ Saraswati MahaVidhyalaya.

Ms. Maitra, having performed in countless international festivals with renowned choreographers including Pt. Birju Maharaj, Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan and Smt. Kumudhini Lakhia, has herself established dance institutions in 5 locations in West Bengal and Japan (Nrityangan Kathak Kendra and Yakshini Kathak Center).

Guided by her Gurus, Pt. Birju Maharaj and Pt.Vijai Shankar, Ms Maitra has been working with the teachers and students of Saraswati Mahavidhyala over the last 5 weeks in Perth and this performance will be the result of their collaboration.

The Temple of Fine Arts/ Saraswati Mahavidhyalaya and Annalakshmi Cultural Center of WA are proud to present Maharaji - a dance presentation by the legendary world renown Kathak Master, Pandit Birju Maharaj.

The charming, talented and dignified personality of Brijmohan Nath Mishra also known as Pandit Birju Maharaj will soon grace the shores of Perth, Western Australia. Being the inheritor of the Lucknow Kalka-Bindadin school or gharana, and the descendant of the legendary Maharaj family of Kathak dancers, including his two uncles, Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj, and his father and guru, Acchan Maharaj, he is currently the leading exponent of Kathak in the world.

Ever immersed in the nuances of Kathak, Maharaji also has an excellent command over Hindustani classical music and is a virtuoso in vocals and several percussion and string instruments. Being thus enormously gifted, this 'complete artiste' has been instrumental in taking Kathak dance to new heights in choreography and has presented thousands of performances in his extensive tours around the globe.

He will be accompanied by his disciple Ms. Saswati Sen, a brilliant dancer and choreographer who works closely with Maharaji.

Swan Festival of Lights 2008 Photographs

The Temple of Fine Arts (TFA) in association with Annalakshmi on the Swan and The Bell Tower, organised the Swan Festival of Lights in October this year.

This two day event, from 17 – 18 October 2008 (Friday and Saturday) explored the universal theme of light whilst showcasing the best in West Australian multicultural performing arts. Some of the cultural groups being represented at the festival included Indian (performances by TFA), Chinese (Chung Wah), Spanish (Puro Flamenco), Ukrainian (Roztiazhka Ukrainian Cossack Dancers), Capoeira (Bantus Capoeira), Aboriginal Traditional Dance (Gya Ngoop Kobori Group), Dragon Dancers and fusion music group Mukti.

Pandit Baluji Shrivatsav

Annalakshmi on the Swan in collaboration with The Temple of Fine Arts (inc) Perth presents Pandit Baluji Shrivatsav on Sitar. Pandit Baluji is one of India's greatest Sitarists. He is also the only musician with solo album releases of dilruba (fretted fiddle) and Surbhar (bass sitar). Pandit Baluji’s playing has been described as “lush and utterly fresh” (Scotsman 2007).

Pandit Baluji’s speciality lies in being able to make Indian Classical music more than just about incredible technique but about emotion and feelings. Pandit Baluji usually works in a trio with tabla and tanpura accompaniment. His ability to communicate using the subtleties and complexities of sitar transcends cultural boundaries.

His command of complex rhythms and his inexhaustible imagination make every performance a unique and moving occasion. Pandit Baluji represents the highest level of his art.
Pandit Baluji Shrivatsav will be accompanied by Shri Vickneswaran Ramakrishnan on Tabla.

The Temple of Fine Arts (TFA) in association with Annalakshmi on the Swan and The Bell Tower, invites you to a unique cultural festival in October.

Known as the Swan Festival of Lights, this two day event, from 17 – 18 October 2008 (Friday and Saturday) explores the universal theme of light whilst showcasing the best in West Australian multicultural performing arts. Some of the cultural groups being represented at the festival include Indian (performances by TFA), Chinese, Spanish, Ukrainian and Malaysian.

The festival will be held at Perth’s iconic Bell Tower in the Barrack Square and will feature a delectable spread of vegetarian cuisine catered by Annalakshmi. Food will be available from 12noon each day and performances commence at 6.30pm.

Entrance to the festival is free and coupons to purchase food will be made available from Annalakshmi prior to the event. The festival is an alcohol and smoke free event.

If you, like us, are excited by the festival and are keen to support it financially, we would be more than happy to accept your generosity. As a cultural organisation, TFA (ABN: 71 163 607 443) has endorsement from the Australian Tax Office to issue tax-deductible receipts for donations of $2 or more.

Art Workshop

LAST Sunday 23rd November 2008, in an effort to raise funds - Saraswati Mahavidhyalaya held its very first creative art workshop.The fun packed 2 hour long 22 participant workshop, hosted by resident artist and TFA dance teacher Sarasa Krishnan, gave individuals an introduction into the fantastic world of art. The workshop covered basics in shape, light & dark shading, colour and working with music. These were all made full use of, as each participant; towards the later part of the class, worked on a major project - that when completed, gave them something to take home.

This coming Sunday 30th November 2008 from 10am - 4pm, is our Food & Fun Fair. This event is especially organised for the students, teachers and their families to meet, greet and have FUN

Through this fun fair, we hope to

1. Create a fun filled environment for all students/parents and teachers to kick back and relax.
2. Create a stress free environment for both students and parents to work together in raising funds for the school.
3. Encourage students to discover various leadership qualities and to work efficiently within teams.

2. Games between teachers and parents
3. Lots and lots of tasty and delightful food
4. Fun contests for the kids

Suvarna Sutra @ Nexus Theatre

The Temple of Fine Arts’ recent production (July 2008), “Suvarna Sutra - seeing music, hearing images, painting dance” at The Nexus Theatre Murdoch University, was a production that took the audience into the realm of an artist’s imagination. The nuances of dance (Odissi, Bharata Natyam, Kathak and Western Contemporary) interwoven with visual art paintings and ancient Indian song and poetry, Suvarna Sutra provided for interesting viewing.

The last half hour ‘Shakti – The Eternal Energy’ was a culmination of the work, that was not afraid to take chances. This August (5th – 9th), Shakti – The Eternal Energy will be presented at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Scotland in the United Kingdom.

A New Home

FuegoAgni: A Flamenco/Kathak Fusion

The Temple of Fine Arts and Academia y Compañia Arte y Flamenco present FuegoAgni - for the first time, an exciting Flamenco/Kathak Fusion performance that hints at the origin of Flamenco from Kathak and draws on the similarities between the two dance styles. Performed by flamenco exponent, Claudio Javaroni (Academia y Compañia Arte y Flamenco) and Artistic Director/ choreographer Sarasa Krishnan in Florence, Italy.

Accompanied on Tabla by Maestro Vick Ramakrishnan (TFA Perth) and Sitar Maestro Kumar Karthigesu (TFA KL). Javarone and Krishnan will explore the tonal variations and intricacies of rhythms of the tabla with rhythmic footwork of Flamenco and Kathak. Set at lightening speeds, Javarone and Krishnan will infuse and combine these two styles with thunderous exciting intonation of precise flamenco - kathak rhythms.

With a concluding vocal rendition by Pandit Chandrakant Kapileshwari accompanied by Kumar Kartigesu (TFA KL) on Sitar and Vickneswaran Ramakrishnan (TFA Perth) on Tabla.

Spreading its Wings in Europe

Artistic director, Sarasa Krishnan is presently in Florence, Italy conducting a 3 month course in Bharatha Natyam, Odissi and Kathak of Indian Dance. Under the auspices of the Ayurvedic Center of Florence, Sarasa is conducting classes for children, adult beginers and master-classes for teachers of dance. Sarasa is also conducting weekly workshops on Bharatha Natyam, Odissi and Kathak, for the dancers of OPUS BALLET (an academy of dance in Florence, Italy). During her stay she met and collaborated with Flamenco master Manuel Betanzos of Spain.

Enhanced with Indian and modern dance movements, this unique fashion parade explores how the Sari transforms itself through the various stages of femininity in Indian culture; right from the playful child - Bala whose Sari is converted into a skirt, till her grandmother - Lalitha whose sari reflects her accepting and all loving nature. The Rasa experienced by the artist and the audience transcends this world of name and form; finally leads to liberation. Based on the Taittriya Upanishad - an Ancient Sancrit text that describes that ultimate state of bliss. World Premiere: Kaustubha

Complementing Vishwa Vinayaka in the second half of the evening is the world premiere of Kaustubha, an exhilarating duet between the acclaimed maestro of violin Dr L Subramaniam and the Kathak (traditional dance form of North India) legend Pandit Birju Maharaj.

The collaboration has been choreographed as a special tribute for the 25th birthday of the Temple of Fine Arts and is a unique combination of North Indian dance with South Indian music. This ‘edge of your seat’ spectacular should not be missed.

Europe Tour

A group of artists had travelled to Europe on a three-week tour, taking part in performances in France and Italy. The group had also been conducting workshops that involved:

Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival

The Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival had come to Western Australia for the first time. The festival of fusion music featured some of the most popular names in Indian music, such as Dr. L. Subramaniam on the violin, and singing sensation Kavita Krishnamurthy.

Founded by renowned violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam in 1992, in memory of his late father, Professor V. Lakshminarayana, the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festivals held annually and has been hosted by India, the United States, Germany in conjunction with the Berlin Festival, Sri Lanka, Norway and other countries. The festival has seen the coming together of the finest musicians from all around the globe.

The festival is the only global music festival where eminent artists around the world share the stage in a mélange of cultural and musical traditions. In the past, the festival had featured collaborative works of L. Subramaniam, his wife Kavita Krishnamurthy Subramaniam, Steven Seagal, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Stanley Clarke, Pandit Jasraj , Billy Cobham, Jean Luc Ponty, Miya Masaoka, Chris Rhyne, Ghulam Ali, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Roar Engelberg and others.

The tour which culminated in Malaysia, was presented by The Temple of Fine Arts International. The tour had presented a 14-member fusion orchestra by some of the world’s best musicians. Utilising a plethora of instrumentation such as the Indian violin, sarangi, bass guitar and keyboards, the show came together as an exciting package, that comprised of the finest fusion of artists and their music, that reached out to cultural audiences in Western Australia.

Artists from Temple of Fine Arts had the opportunity to accompany Dr. L. Subramaniam, his troupe and Kavita Krishnamurthy to Singapore and Malaysia as a part of the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival. The Temple of Fine Arts was given the opening act for the evening, and at other times accompanied the mellifluous voice of Kavita Krishnamurthy, through movement - as she churned out her Bollywood hits.

Patron, Guiding Light & Guru Attained Mahasamadhi

His Holiness Swami Shantanand Saraswathi attained Mahasamadhi (left his mortal form) on the 27th July 2005 in Coimbatore, India. Thousands of devotees around the world gathered in Coimbatore for the customery rituals and ceremony. In a serene and full ceremonious manner our beloved light and joy, Swamiji was laid to rest, in the Shivanjali Centre located in Vadavalli, Coimbatore. Dancers, artists, and devotees came together and rejoiced in dance, music & poetic love offerings. His inner light becoming one with the universal energy is one of the most auspious moments of a soul's journey. Swamiji as we lovingly call him was singulary instrumental in establishing the lifeforce that lies within the Temple of Fine Arts.... His inspiration in careful nurturing thousands young and old to serve, love & give without expectation was one of the most valuable teachings instilled. His presence will always be with us.

Kadhambari in New York

The Temple of Fine Arts International celebrated the joyous 9-day festival - Navaratri, in New Jersey, USA. Nava (nine) and ratri (night), this ancient festival in praise of the Divine Mother was rejoiced in a blissful mixture of dance, music & prayer. Every night performances of moving melodies, enthralling movements and stirring ancient poetry was dedicated to the Divine. On the tenth day, known as Vijaya Dhashami (victorious ten days) The Temple of Fine Arts International presented a Kadambri - a garland of movement, music and expression, a love offering to the community.

Ballet Under the Stars

The Temple of Fine Arts had been given the honour of opening 'Ballet Under the Stars', a co-operative performance organised and presented by the WA Ballet. The Temple of Fine Arts performed the Batu Nritta, an expression of vibrant pure dance movement intertwined with complex patterns and woven in a thread of evocative melodies. The piece spoke of ancient sculptured poses - Karanas - found in Temples of Eastern India, that had miraculously come to life. Performed in the Eastern Indian Classical style of dance, Odissi and held at the Forrest Place outdoor city central public arena.

Devadasi, the ancient story of a young girl who grew with rich traditions in a place magical in spirit. Based on the ancient & traditional scriptures of South India, the story was the journey of a young girl's life living in the temple - dedicating herself to that supreme energy. A journey told through the eyes of a Devadasi, a stage production by The Temple of Fine Arts presented in the South Indian Classical dance form, Bharatha Natyam was held at the St Marry's Auditorium.
